CLEAN WATER MANAGEMENT TRUST FUND BOARD MEETS IN RALEIGH TO REVIEW STORMWATER AND RESTORATION GRANT APPLICATIONS

RALEIGH -- The 21-member board of the Clean Water Management Trust Fund meets August 12-13 in Raleigh to consider grant applications for restoration and stormwater management projects submitted on March 1, 2007.

The meeting will take place at the North Raleigh Hilton at 3415 Wake Forest Road in Raleigh, beginning with board committee meetings at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday. The full board will meet Monday beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Hilton.

Agendas for all committee meetings, as well as the full board session scheduled for Monday are available on line here.

Before the board are 48 requests for $28.1 million in water quality grants for stormwater management and stream and wetlands restoration projects in communities all across the state, including Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Carolina Beach, Boone, Banner Elk, Albemarle, Lenior and Grifton.

A complete list of projects submitted on March 1, 2007 can be found on line here.

During the Monday session, CWMTF trustees will hear a presentation on "Monitoring Restoration, Urban Stormwater and Best Management Practices Projects" from Barbara Doll of North Carolina State University, North Carolina Sea Grant. In May 2005, the CWMTF Board of Trustees contracted with NCSU to establish a monitoring program to be conducted on a sample of the trust fund's stream restoration, stormwater and agricultural Best Management Practices projects, including an evaluation of some existing projects and more comprehensive monitoring on some recently funded projects.   Preliminary information was presented to the Restoration/ Stormwater Committee in October 2006.

The CWMTF was established 1996 to help finance projects that enhance or restore degraded waters, protect unpolluted waters, and/or contribute toward a network of riparian buffers and greenways for environmental, educational, and recreational benefits.

CWMTF estimates that over $17 billion is needed to protect and restore water quality in North Carolina.

The independent, CWMTF Board of Trustees has full responsibility over the allocation of moneys from the Fund.
