Profile of a Successful Trustee

The successful trustee is a productive and responsible team player who works in a high quality manner while serving CWMTF’s mission and operating plan.

Team Player: helps develop a strong team culture that supports a high level of group (board and staff) functioning with the organization.

High Quality: maintains a high level of performance in trustee responsibilities as defined below.

Trustee Roles and Responsibilities

Individual

1. Trustee has a high level of knowledge in one or more aspects of surface water quality or related issues and is willing to develop a broad range of understanding about water quality as it relates to funding projects for CWMTF.

2. Trustee is prepared for board and committee meetings prior to attending.

3. Trustee is able to commit to a high level of attendance and participation at board and committee meetings.

4. Trustee assists the board chairman and executive director in orienting new trustees to their roles and responsibilities on the board.

Group (Team)

5. Trustees assist in overseeing management and fiscal activities of CWMTF.

6. Trustees hire the Executive Director and oversee policy decisions that affect staff.

7. Trustees commit to operate within the agreed-upon norms of CWMTF.

8. Trustees continue to define key indicators of success for CWMTF, including scientific, social and political measures.

9.Trustees advocate and communicate the mission of CWMTF to the external community.

CWMTF Trustee Roles and Responsibilities Defined

Individual

1.  Trustee has a high level of knowledge in one or more aspects of surface water quality or related issues and is willing to develop a broad range of understanding about water quality as it relates to funding projects for CWMTF.

  • reviews grant applications
  • approves grant applications for projects with demonstrable and cost effective water quality benefits
  • shares knowledge with other trustees and staff during board meeting and retreats
  • researches unfamiliar topics and issues
  • tests ideas with appropriate sources before making judgments or voting

2.  Trustee is prepared for board and committee meetings prior to attending.

  • reads grant applications and other project information            
  • understands committee work and current issues related to the decisions
  • prepares for each grant application vote
  • knows the agenda beforehand and brings all relevant materials to meetings
  • completes all homework and assignments
  • follows progress of approved projects

3.  Trustee is able to commit to a high level of attendance and participation at board and committee meetings.

  • attends board and committee meetings
  • actively participates in and/or chairs at least  two committees
  • honors board ethics policies
4.  Trustee assists the board chairman and executive director in orienting new trustees to their roles and responsibilities on the board.
Group
5.  Trustees assist in overseeing management and fiscal activities of CWMTF.
  • establish the overall strategic direction for CWMTF
  • approve CWMTF annual administrative budget
  • understand fiscal impact of grant application decisions
  • seek accurate accounting of how dollars are spent and managed
  • keep trustee expenses manageable in relation to the budgeted plan
6.  Trustees hire the executive director and oversees policy decisions that affect staff.

  • evaluate performance of the executive director annually
  • approve personnel policies that support the human resource goals of the        organization
  • coordinate strategy with staff and respects staff roles and responsibilities

7.  Trustees commit to operating within the agreed-upon norms of CWMTF.

  • give and receive feedback at appropriate times
  • insure actions are of high integrity (minimizing board gossip, making concerns overt instead of covert, being open to feedback, respecting differences of personalities, etc.)
  • agree to support board-approved strategies regardless of personal feelings

8.  Trustees continue to define key scientific indicators of success for CWMTF.

  • work with staff and project partners to develop scientific indicators for success for the various types of projects funded            
  • change or refine indicators when they are no longer valid
9.  Trustees advocate and communicate the mission of CWMTF to the external community.

  • communicate with constituents in his/her region
  • advocate with local and state media, based on CWMTF media plan
  • maintain contacts with associations and political organizations
  • participate in dedications of CWMTF projects
  • channel interest by outside parties to appropriate resources within CWMTF
