Clean Water Management Trust Fund Reviews New Land Acquisition Grants

RALEIGH – The board of trustees of the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund (CWMTF) holds its regularly scheduled meeting Monday, February 9, 2004 in Southern Pines.

Monday’s meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. and will be held at the Holiday Inn 650 US Highway 1 & Morganton Road.

The board's stewardship, acquisition, personnel, budget, long range planning and criteria committees will meet on Sunday, February 8 beginning at 3:15 at the Holiday Inn.  Agendas for all CWMTF meetings can be found here.

During the board's Monday meeting, CWMTF trustees are scheduled to hear preliminary recommendations from the board’s acquisition committee on at least 26 new funding requests.  Most of the requests were submitted on December 1, 2003 and they include:

·        Town of Cary’s White Oak Creek Greenway Project Phase III ($1,217,300

·        Town of Fairbluff’s Lumber River Welcome Center Project ($163,000)

·        City of Goldsboro/Wayne County’s Stoney Creek/Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Protection Project ($1,737,000)

·        City of Lumberton’s Lumber River Greenway Project ($100,000)

·        The Nature Conservancy’s Wallace Deer Club Acquisition Project ($8,707,063)

·        NC Coastal Federation’s Quarternary Tract on the White Oak River ($1,977,600)

In addition to the grant request review, Col. Al Aycock, Garrison Commander, Ft. Bragg, will brief the trustees on the U.S. Army’s efforts to protect the environment.

The CWMTF was established in 1996 to help finance projects that enhance or restore degraded waters, protect unpolluted waters, and/or contribute toward a network of riparian buffers and greenways for environmental, educational, and recreational benefits. CWMTF estimates that more than $10.5 billion is needed to protect and restore water quality in North Carolina.

The 21-member, independent, CWMTF Board of Trustees has full responsibility over the allocation of money from the fund.
