City of
Goldsboro Constructed Wetlands Project
FACT SHEET
- Clean Water Managment
Trust Fund (CWMTF) has provided a $1,640,000 grant towards building
the constructed wetlands project. Anticipated total project cost
is $3,215,000 with the City of Goldsboro providing the additional
funding.
- The project was one
of the first awarded a grant by the CWMTF; the grant was submitted
in June 1997, the CWMTF's first grant cycle after being established
in 1996. CWMTF has invested over $35,545,570 to protect and improve
waters of the Neuse River Basin. (Click
here for list of CWMTF projects funded by river basin)
- The project consists
of building 40-acres of constructed wetlands (or man-made wetlands)
inside clay-lined containment berms. Future plans include expansion
by 20 more acres based on success of initial project.
- The project will reduce
nitrogen in the Neuse River by using the natural processes found
in wetlands to further clean highly treated wastewater from the
city's advanced treatment facility. This cleaning process is known
as "polishing."
- The polishing process
depends heavily on plant species common to wetland environments.
The Goldsboro constructed wetland project will include some 13 plant
species. (Click here
for species list )
- Once the constructed
wetlands are fully operational, one to four million gallons per
day will be "polished" by the wetland plants.
- Treated wastewater entering
the constructed wetlands will have an average Total Nitrogen content
of 3.2 milligrams per litre. The wetland plants are expected to
"polish" the water to less than 1 milligrams per litre.
The project is estimated to reduce Total Nitrogen by at least 10,800
pounds per year.
- The wetland plants will
also remove phosphorus, another nutrient, out of the water, providing
a secondary benefit to the Neuse.
- The City of Goldsboro
plans to conduct a four-year study to demonstrate the effectiveness
of the wetlands "polishing" treatment capability.
- The constructed wetlands
project is just one piece of Goldsboro's overall effort to reduce
pollutants in the Neuse. The city is also building a reuse project
on 114-acres of farmlands. The reuse water will be used to irrigate
hay as well as the 145-acre municipal golf course. The NC Clean
Water Management Trust Fund has contributed $789,360 to the reuse
project. Total project cost is $2,958,000.
