CLEAN WATER MANAGEMENT TRUST FUND BOARD MEETS IN RALEIGH

RALEIGH - The board of trustees of the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund (CWMTF) holds its regularly scheduled meeting Monday, January 12, 2003.

Monday's meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. and will be held at the Holiday Inn Brownstone, located at 1707 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh. Kenn Gardner, Chairman of the Wake County Board of Commissioners will welcome trustees to Wake County and will speak briefly on Wake County's water quality efforts.

The board's personnel, long range planning and criteria committees will meet on Sunday, January 11 starting at 1:30. Complete agendas for all January meetings can be found on the CWMTF web site at http://www.cwmtf.net/january04agenda.htm

During the board's Monday meeting, trustees will hear a presentation from Richard Rogers, director of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources' Office of Conservation and Community Affairs. Rogers will update trustees on Governor Mike Easley's One North Carolina Naturally Initiative and the state's goal of protecting a million acres of open space

Chris Dreps, director of the Upper Neuse River Basin Association also will present the CWMTF board with the Upper Neuse Watershed Management Plan. The plan covers portions of the river above Falls Lake.

CWMTF Trustees will begin reviewing current grant applications totaling $151.8 million at its meeting in Moore County February 8-9. CWMTF received 66 new grant proposals requesting $85.1 million submitted December 1. The board also will consider 15 previously submitted but deferred grants in its review.

The CWMTF was established 1996 to help finance projects that enhance or restore degraded waters, protect unpolluted waters, and/or contribute toward a network of riparian buffers and greenways for environmental, educational, and recreational benefits. CWMTF estimates that over $10.5 billion is needed to protect and restore water quality in North Carolina.

The 21-member, independent, CWMTF Board of Trustees has full responsibility over the allocation of moneys from the Fund.
