CWMTF Trustees Meet in Wilmington November 15-16 to Consider Funding Priorities

RALEIGH – The board of trustees of the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund holds its regularly scheduled meeting Monday, November 14, 2005 in Wilmington to make final decisions on $91.1 million in water quality grant requests currently eligible for funding.

Among the 102 projects receiving final consideration are the following:

  • Acquisition of the World's Edge Tract by the Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy to protect Wolf and Pool creeks in Henderson County in the Broad River Basin - $3.9 million
  • Acquisition of the Pegg Tract by the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation to protect the Haw River in Chatham County in the Cape Fear River Basin - $720,000
  • Phase VII of Mecklenburg County's Stormwater and Restoration Initiative to protect Little Sugar Creek in the Catawba River Basin - $280,00
  • Wastewater discharge elmination by the city of Southport to protect Cottage Creek in Brunswick County in the Cape Fear River Basin - $1.6 million
  • Acquisition of the Foy Tract by the N.C. Coastal Land Trust to protect Foy Creek in Pender County in the Cape Fear River Basin -$1.3 million
  • Sewer system rehabillitation by the town of Elm City to protect Town Creek in Wilson County in the Tar-Pamlico River Basin - $1 million
  • Decommissioning of the Handy Sanitary District wastewater treatment plant to protect Badin Lake in Montgomery County in the Yadkin River Basin - $3 million

Monday’s meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. and will be held at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside located at 301 N. Water Street.

On Sunday, November 13 beginning at 11:00 a.m., the board's Personnel Committee will meet at the Hilton. Beginning at 12:30 p.m., the restoration and stormwater,Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, infrastructure and wastewater,acquisition,stewardship, and office space committees will meet in room 301 at the New Hanover County Courthouse located at 24 North Third Street in Wilmington. At Monday's meeting, CWMTF trustees also will hear a presentation on "Water Quality Trends and Issues in Southeastern North Carolina" from Dr. Mike Mallin, University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

The CWMTF was established in 1996 to help finance projects that enhance or restore degraded waters, protect unpolluted waters, and/or contribute toward a network of riparian buffers and greenways for environmental, educational, and recreational benefits. According to recent estimates by the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center, more than $15 billion is needed to protect and restore water quality in North Carolina.

The 21-member, independent, CWMTF Board of Trustees has full responsibility over the allocation of money from the fund.
