Clean Water Management Trust Fund Reviews New Wastewater Project Grant Applications

RALEIGH – The board of trustees of the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund holds its regularly scheduled meeting Monday, October 11, 2004 in Raleigh.

Monday’s meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. and will be held at the Clarion Hotel State Capital located at 320 Hillsborough Street.
.
The board's acquisition, stewardship, infrastructure/wastewater, and long range planning committees will meet Sunday, October 10 at the same location, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Infrastructure and Wastewater Committee is scheduled to review 22 grant proposals, most of which were submitted for consideration on June 1, 2004. A complete list of the grant requests and the agenda for all committee meetings, as well as project descriptions, can be found at http://www.cwmtf.net/oct04agenda.htm.

The board's acquisition committee, which meets at 9:00 a.m. Sunday, will consider a $18.7 million request from the N.C. Division of Soil and Water Conservation for the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program. CREP is a voluntary water quality protection cost-share program for agricultural landowners in the Neuse, Tar-Pamlico and Chowan river basins and the Jordan Lake watershed. The committee will also review over 30 requests for land acquisition grants.

Projects acted favorably upon by the committees and the full Board of Trustees will remain eligible for further review later this year.

In addition, on Monday, October 11, the board will hear presentations from Kate Dixon with the Land for Tomorrow Coalition and from Leila Goodwin, PE, who is the water resources manager for the Town of Cary. She will discuss the benefits of reusing treated wastewater.

The CWMTF was established in 1996 to help finance projects that enhance or restore degraded waters, protect unpolluted waters, and/or contribute toward a network of riparian buffers and greenways for environmental, educational, and recreational benefits. CWMTF estimates that more than $10.5 billion is needed to protect and restore water quality in North Carolina.

The 21-member, independent, CWMTF Board of Trustees has full responsibility over the allocation of money from the fund.
