CLEAN WATER MANAGEMENT TRUST FUND BOARD AWARDS $26 MILLION TO IMPROVE WASTEWATER TREATMENT ACROSS NC

RALEIGH -- The 21-member board of the Clean Water Management Trust Fund approved $26 million in grants to cities, counties and other local government agencies to help improve wastewater treatment facilities and better water quality across the state at its October 8 meeting.

The grant funds were awarded to planning, design and permitting projects, as well as waste treatment and collection facility construction projects. The CWMTF board reviewed a total of 70 requests for more than $83 million in water quality grants to help repair failing wastewater treatment facilities and septic systems that were submitted for consideration on March 1, 2007.

Among the approved grants was a $3 milion award to the Town of Burgaw to regionalize its wastewater treatment collection system and protect Burgaw Creek in Pender County and a $2.4 million grant to the Town of Mt. Gilead to rehabilitate its wastewater collection system and protect Clarks Creek in Montgomery County.

A complete list of approved wastewater grants can be found on-line here.

In addition to funding 50 wastewater grants at its October meeting, the CWMTF board will consider another 12 requests totaling nearly $11 million when it meets on November 12, 2007 in Raleigh.

So far in its 2007 grant cycle, the CWMTF board has awarded approximately $86.5 million in grant funds for restoration and stormwater, acquisition, and wastewater projects that will protect the state's surface waters. In August, the board approved 34 stormwater projects totaling $15 million. In September, 47 land acquisition projects totaling $44.6 million were also approved.

A list of the restoration and stormwater project approved in August is available on line here.

A list of the acquisition projects approved by the CWMTF board in September is available on line here.

The CWMTF was established 1996 to help finance projects that enhance or restore degraded waters, protect unpolluted waters, and/or contribute toward a network of riparian buffers and greenways for environmental, educational, and recreational benefits.

CWMTF estimates that over $17 billion is needed to protect and restore water quality in North Carolina.

The independent, CWMTF Board of Trustees has full responsibility over the allocation of moneys from the trust fund.
